Media and Advertisement Design graduate Helen Cornelia Kuklane received a scholarship from the Estonian Rectors’ Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences for her graduation thesis “Creating a Visual Identity for Rõuge Municipality“.

Rõuge Municipality is located in Võru County. It acquired its current form in 2017 when the municipalities of Mõniste, Varstu, Haanja, Misso, and Rõuge were merged as part of an administrative reform. After the merger, the question of the digital identity of the joint municipality arose.

In the first part of her thesis, Helen Cornelia Kuklane studied the history of the symbolism of the merged municipalities. In addition, she compiled an overview of the current visual identity of Rõuge municipality and its weaknesses. In the practical part of the work, Helen created a style guide for Rõuge that unites the former municipalities and allows better marketing of Rõuge. Along with the style guide, she also designed various templates that make it easy to implement the design and layout principles.

Supervisors of the thesis were Marko Kekišev and Mart Anderson.

Estonian Rectors’ Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences (Rakenduskõrgkoolide Rektorite Nõukogu, RKRN, in Estonian) annually awards scholarships to the authors of the best theses at universities of applied sciences. The purpose of the competition is to value the applied research done by students at universities of applied sciences, to stimulate students’ activity in preparing their creative and applied projects, and to recognize students who have achieved outstanding results. The best theses are determined by an internal competition in each higher education institution, and the authors of the thesis are recognized with a scholarship and a letter of honour at the graduation ceremonies of the higher education institutions.

The scholarship is 1,000 euros for each member university of the Estonian Rectors’ Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences.

In addition to the Pallas graduate, the best thesis scholarship was also awarded to the graduates of the Estonian Aviation Academy, Tallinn University of Technology, Tartu Health Care College, Estonian Military Academy, Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences, Tallinn Health Care College, and The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences.
