DEPARTMENT OF FURNITURE

The curriculum of artistic wood design was created in 1955, and re-conceived as the curriculum of furniture design and restoration in 1990. The curriculum was developed by Jaak Roosi. The Head of Department is Aivar Habakukk.

The curriculum provides a broad education in furniture, specializing in either design or conservation/restoration. The selection must be made before the beginning of studies.

The design track is oriented towards small and medium-size businesses, without excluding cooperation with major industries. An integral part of the curriculum is participation in collaborative projects and exhibitions, including consistent participation at trade fairs in Stockholm and London.

The purpose of the conservation/restoration track is to educate specialists in conservation and research of heritage furniture. Students in conservation/restoration collaborate with museums and the National Heritage Board. Graduates work as designers, practitioners, or conservationists/restorers in both the public and private sector. Many continue on to postgraduate study.
