The Students of The Department of Furniture At Pallas UAS Invite Visitors To Explore The Space of Tartu Sadamaraudtee

Spatial Concepts For The Area of Tartu Sadamaraudtee.
October 24 – November 22, 2025

On Friday, October 24 at 6 PM, the exhibition “Spatial Concepts for the Area of Tartu Sadamaraudtee” will open in the project room of gallery Pallas. The design concepts created by fourth-year students of the Department of Furniture at Pallas University of Applied Sciences propose ideas for developing the area, inspired by play as a way of discovering urban space.

The works were completed during the autumn semester of 2024 as part of a design project supervised by landscape architect Kerli Irbo. The exhibition features posters by six former students, now alumni, of the Department of Furniture, showcasing playful and site-specific spatial solutions aimed to encourage exploration and engagement.

The students’ assignment was to analyse the current state of the area and to find ways to connect existing elements with new uses. The main focus was on play as a way of discovering urban space – how playfulness can transform the meaning and use of a place.

During the design process, students explored questions such as: Who uses urban space, and what encourages curiosity to explore it? How can the environment and existing objects become part of the design solution?

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey that reveal both the current character and future potential of the area through site-specific design approaches.

On November 6 at 3:30-4:30 PM, everyone is welcome to join a discussion titled “Play as a Way of Discovering Space.” The discussion will be led by Kristina Allik, Head of the Department of Furniture and lecturer at Pallas UAS, landscape architect Kerli Irbo, and the authors of the design concepts.

The participating authors: Egel Talv, Isabel Mündel, Martin Soome, Märt-Kaarel Petser, Boris Pakk, and Mark Drõgin.

„Spatial Concepts For The Area of Tartu Sadamaraudtee“ will remain open until November 22.
