All Quiet on the Eastern Border

The international photography exhibition “All Quiet on the Eastern Border” opens at the Gallery of the University of Tartu Narva College on September 3 at 5 PM, presenting the current outcomes of ongoing documentary photography projects by Luca Berti, Anthony Haughey and Raphaël Gianelli-Meriano. The exhibition approaches the eastern border of Europe and NATO not only as a geographical line, but also as a historical, cultural, psychological, and perceptual condition.

Through the work of the three artists, the exhibition addresses both physical and invisible borders that continue to live on in people, language, memory, emotions, and the polarizing division between “us” and “them.” In the context of Narva, this becomes especially meaningful, as the border is part of the city’s everyday urban and communal experience. Due to Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, the eastern border of the Baltic states has become a subject of increased political and public attention. The exhibition creates a space for dialogue and for different perspectives and experiences to meet.

Luca Berti focuses on Setomaa and the identity of the Seto people; Anthony Haughey explores Europe’s changing borders, memory, and sense of security; and Raphaël Gianelli-Meriano examines the present condition of communities and post-industrial heritage in Ida-Viru County.

The artists participating in the exhibition have previously collaborated with Pallas in various capacities. They have given lectures, taught as visiting lecturers, and participated in final project committees. Their work has also been exhibited at Gallery Pallas in Tartu.

The Gallery of the University of Tartu Narva College is open Monday–Sunday from 8 AM to 7 PM and is located at Raekoja 2, Narva.
