Maila Käos: “I Scream My Longings into Silence”
Gallery Pallas
December 5, 2024 – January 4, 2025
On December 5th at 5 PM, the exhibition by bookbinding artist Maila Käos, titled “I Scream My Longings into Silence,” will open in the project room on the 2nd floor of the Gallery Pallas at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences.
The exhibition will showcase Maila Käos’s bookbindings, with some of the earliest works dating back 20 years. According to the artist, each binding tells its own story, reaching a beginning and an end during the creative process, seeking points of collaboration between the content of the work and the artist. These explorations are filled with beauty, pain, and a longing for perfection and silence. Käos explains: “The state where I scream my longings into silence is inherent to me. Spending countless nights with sheets of paper, sketches, and the necessary tools, I have observed, been disappointed, started over, and through this internal scream reached a result that allows me to let go.”
Much like a painter striving to perfect their work, a bookbinding artists always find details to add or remove. Käos reflects: “Thus, I scream my longing for perfection into silence and let the work go, achieving freedom in the process.”
The artist expresses her gratitude to her mentors Rita Tänav, Rutt Maantoa, and Tõnu Ojaperv, saying, “Without your guidance and example, my world would lack the secrets of bookbinding.”
The exhibition “I Scream My Longings into Silence” will remain open at Pallas Gallery until January 4, 2025.
