On April 25, 2025 at 5:00 PM, the exhibition “Vocabulary: From Term to Object” will open at the gallery of Pallas University of Applied Sciences. The exhibition focuses on terminology related to restoration and art history.
“Vocabulary: From Term to Object” invites visitors to reflect on how language offers new perspectives on objects, whose essence is never merely material. Through words, an object becomes text \u2013 readable, interpretable, and reanimated. It is a call to perceive restoration not simply as a technical field of preservation, but as a deeply interpretive practice that begins with a word and leads to the object.
The interdisciplinary exhibition “Vocabulary: From Term to Object” marks the launch of Pallas’s new curriculum and the beginning of the Department of Conservation and Restoration (CoRe), showcasing paintings, furniture, and leather objects from previous study programmes. Alongside each object are explanations of the terms used and the various styles represented, revealing the linguistic and historical context behind each piece. As curator Heli Tuksam aptly states: \u201cNo crack is just a crack \u2014 it is a word the object speaks about its past.\u201d
Visitors will encounter, for example, reconstructions of antique columns decorated with stencil paintings, showcasing the complexity and sensitivity involved in restoring historical decoration. Also on view is a fascinating selection of unrestored furniture style samples and pattern books. Exhibits from Aivar Roosaar\u2019s collection offer insight into the historical diversity of styles and the evolution of furniture design.
This exhibition is an invitation to engage in dialogue \u2014 with objects, with history, and with language.

The exhibition will remain open until May 24.
On April 30 at 5:00 PM, a public introduction and discussion will be held at the gallery. The event will explore the significance of terminology, objects, and documentation in restoration work. Professionals in the field as well as anyone interested in cultural heritage and its preservation are warmly welcome.
