Moodsad ajad \/ Modern Times<br>27.09.-26.10.2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, September 27, at 4 PM, an exhibition by David Bate, a British London-based artist, theorist, and lecturer, titled &#8220;Modern Times&#8221; will be opened at the Gallery Pallas. On Saturday, September 28, at 12 PM, the artist will be introducing his works at the exhibition tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sense of turmoil in contemporary life seems to be reflected in the very status of photography itself: the future is not guaranteed. The exhibition Modern Times is composed of two photoworks by David Bate that present a personal perspective on the changing dynamics of everyday life and photography. Using photocollage and montage the two projects embody different approaches to ideas of the future, the new so-called \u2018network society\u2019 and new urban \u2018heterotopia\u2019 redevelopments in UK. To think of images and space as a collage is not just a metaphor, but a literal experience of the intersection of personal and public space and time as they collide in screentime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Bate\u2019s practice has increasingly engaged a fascination with space and subjectivity, and developed a conceptual practice that consistently displays an oppositional gaze, refusing easy solutions and subject positions. Bate\u2019s practice embraces multiplicity, desire, difference and fantasy to explore contemporary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project Machinic Unconscious addresses the effects of a Covid 19 \u2018lockdown\u2019 experience, living with a broken digital screen, as emblematic of the fractured social relations and desire for connection. SOT, an acronym for Singapore-on-Thames, presents a newly redeveloped area of south London, juxtaposing the ideal of Singapore as the \u2018background\u2019 ideal model for a new London, a fantasy redevelopment. In both of these photoworks. Modern Times manifests as a disruption of social time and space, where what we consider our natural space is disrupted by photo-experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Bate is widely known for his extensive international publications of critical writings on the history and theory of photography and experimental visual artworks. His work focuses on the critical interactions between the visual image, subjectivity and society. Educated at the Polytechnic of Central London on the famous BA (Hons) Film and Photographic Arts course, he later took the MA Social History of Art at Leeds University, where he also completed a PhD in the Fine Art Department. He has lectured and presented work all over the world. In 2018 he was recipient of the Royal Photographic Society Award for Education.
